Reviving Instant Film

Don’t undertake a project unless it is manifestly important and nearly impossible.
That quote by Edwin Land, the inventor of Instant Photography, has inspired a group of Polaroid enthusiasts with the resources and know-how to reinvent Instant Film in an effort to give people a product now that Polaroid has repositioned itself and ceased production of Polaroid Instant Film.
Dubbed ‘The Impossible Project,’ they purchased the complete film production equipment in Enschede (NL) from Polaroid and signed a 10 year lease on the factory. The old process is antiquated and not financially feasible any longer, so they are working hard to streamline and modernize this process, and that is their challenge.
Check out the site at www.the-impossible-project.com to view the team, check out sweet Polaroids of the factory, and view their ‘7 Challenges’ to making this work. They hope to bring us Instant Film by 2010.
The NYTimes had a nice article about the whole process: nytimes.com.
I hope they are able to figure this out! I really want to make a Holgaroid.

Fuji is bringing out their own film. they have 4×5 instant film for large and medium format users, and we just got in an instant camera by Fuji at Midwest Photo (www.mpex.com) Its kinda neat, though the camera itself looks like a toy.
i hope they actually do this too. i’m going to be so disappointed if my hopes are dashed. I… NEED… FILM. keeping all my body parts crossed.
