parse_01Just launched today is the brainchild of Jennifer and Ken Visocky O’Grady known as Parse. This site aims to top off your knowledge base with relevant articles and information from a number of great practicing designers from around the country.

“Parse aims to make sense of issues and information relevant to design practitioners, regardless of the disciplines they work in. Parse makes big ideas useful, actionable and applicable. It distills jargon, reduces complexity, pares words, omits gobbledygook. It’s open-source, approachable and friendly.”

I came across this earlier in the summer and just saw it again in Steve Jobs’ live conference. Enjoy. See more at tarpsurfing.com

jlbooksThese collections of contemporary art and photography are the publishing work of J&L Books. This New York / Atlanta based non-profit publisher produces the work of rarely seen or unpublished contemporary artists. J&L and its volunteers only produce two to five new books each year. They also offer collections of limited edition prints. If you follow the New York Art Book Fair you might have already come across them. According to their site they are making another appearance this November. See more at J&L Books

cleve_04cleve_01cleve_03cleve_02I’m not sure how long ago this occurred, but I just recently happened to stumble past it and thought I would share. American artist Mark Reigelman in partnership with the Cleveland Public Art was commissioned by the Cleveland Museum of Art to create White Cloud an outdoor installation for their annual Summer Solstice party. The installation took Reigelman and CPA almost two weeks to construct. Eventually the piece had to be taken down due to thunderstorms and strong winds. The installation comprised of nearly 100 eight-foot weather balloons, a dozen 22-foot steel poles and rope. Pretty awesome what some people can do with balloons, rope and some imagination.

Cinematographer Jess Gibson captures a look at Highway 127’s annual “Worlds Longest Yard Sale.” Featuring Aaron Draplin, Dale Dixon, Evan Rose and all of the strong language you could ever want. This massive yard sale stretches 627 miles from Defiance, Ohio all the way down to Gadsden, Alabama. This is a junk buyers dream. To see all of the episodes from this crazy journey visit the site.

fablab_1fablab_02fablab_03This Pre Fab bean-like beauty known as the “FabLab” actually produces more energy than it consumes. Designed to be setup almost any where in the world this award winning energy producing home combines aesthetics with eco-friendly. The house is constructed mainly of laser cut plywood and is meant to live outside the power grid. Learn more about this house and the other projects from the people at IAAC and FabLab.

For those of you who haven’t had their taste of summer vacation yet take this moment to travel from New York to San Francisco with this viral video from Levis. The catchy tune you are hearing is titled “Home” by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros coming from their 2009 album “Up From Below” (a personal favorite of mine). Also check out the route they traveled.

This is not the A-frame you stayed in during that summer at church camp. The Allendale House known as “A Cabin of Curiosities” is the combination of three sections of A-frame linked together.

“The house aims to undermine the seeming limitations of a triangular section by augmenting and revealing the extreme proportion in the vertical direction”

The interior of the cabin utilizes exposed storage and open shelving to fill the odd shape of the space and to square the rooms off. No details were spared on this cabin in the woods. See more photos of the Allendale and project renderings at wojr.org

If there was ever a Lite-Brite for adults this is it. Beck’s, DJ Cheeba and Outside Line studios collaborate to create an interactive music and light experience. As Cheeba pulls the pump a sample and custom flash application are triggered to change the sound and display. Where can I get one of these?
