At a recent Drinks with Designer event at Dror, local designers from many fields came together to have a casual conversation about the industry with one of it’s innovators.
Dror dove into the discussion showcasing his studio with a quick tour boasting many of the studio’s famous pieces. The Pick Chair was a highlight, showcasing both it’s modern aesthetic and functionality for small spaces.
He explained that his approach to many projects is similar, on any scale, in thinking about the concept in an unusual way. Designing something based on a previous idea isn’t his standard of creating something new. A key to his studio’s approach is the encouragement to stray from the actual client-based work.
70% of what we do is things that we were not asked to do.
The interdisciplinary practice doesn’t discriminate when it comes to tackling a project. His studio thrives on the collaboration. Even with the Target collection in 2009, Dror approached the project with a view of having an object be able to connect with a person through functionality that was able to change.
Dror’s location in midtown Manhattan creates the perfect atmosphere for all things changing. The fashion district is notorious for cutting edge, and Dror looks to his studio as no exception.
Part of the work of being a designer is to be a forecaster.
