This Saturday an estimated one billion people across the world will come together to participate in the 4th Annual Earth Hour.
Earth Hour is a global event organized by the World Wildlife Fund and takes place the last Saturday in March. It began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 when 2.2 million homes and business turned their lights off for one hour to raise awareness about climate change. A year later Earth Hour became a global event with more than 36 million people across 35 countries participating. In 2009, over 4,000 cities in 88 countries took part, including several iconic landmarks like the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Acropolis and Parthenon in Athens, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament in London and the Las Vegas Strip in the U.S.. With the number of participates growing each year, this year’s Earth Hour looks to be the biggest yet.
Regardless of whether or not you believe climate change is taking place, it’s definitely mind-blowing to think about how many different people across the world come together for this event. To participate in Earth Hour 2010, simply turn off your computer, your TV and your lights tomorrow, March 27th, from 8:30 to 9:30 PM (your local time).
