Dutch designers Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn began developing the idea of creating community-driven art interventions in Brazil. After painting two murals in Vila Cruzeiro, Hass & Hahn began the third stage of their Favela Painting project in the community of Santa Marta. Located in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, Santa Marta is one of Brazil’s most notorious ‘favelas’ or shantytowns. Employing local residents and training them in professional painting techniques and safety, the final result was a huge work of art spanning 34 houses.
I’m always in awe when I see projects like this. It’s hard to imagine something so dramatic and so colorful on buildings here in the States.
