Today, Oct 26, 2009 – Yahoo! owned Geocities is closing. Geocities began in 1995 and is a vivid memory of many who were on the internet at that time. Huge pink type, terrible animated .gifs, and rainbow backgrounds are the most common thing I think of when I hear ‘Geocities’. Geocities’ popularity has declined since 1999 when Yahoo! purchased the site for $3.5 billion. Yes, billion.
Luckily, ArchiveTeam has created a site preserving hundreds of the infamous animated .gif ‘under construction’ signs commonly associated with Geocities. Here are a few:

Awe, the good old days! This brings back very vivid memories of being in middle school making my first Web site…it was a Red Dwarf fan site…oh yeah! R.I.P Geocities and all the embarrassing website I made as an adolescent.
