I have been following the AIGA Make Think Conference 2009 twitter feeds (you should too! #makethink) and everyone has been talking about this video! Book cover designer Charles Brock created it for the conference and from what I hear, it was quite a hit! Keeping print alive is so important to me and this video just made my weekend. Thanks, Charles!

That was done perfectly! Great Post!

That’s a good point. Beyond covers, there’s also the way type is displayed in books that makes an impact on how you read. At least with online books you still can display covers and set type.
I think a lot of the problem with Kindle could be solved simply by making it so kindle displays cover graphics. That way, it’s still necessary to design covers but people who wish to read electronically could still do so without the loss of such an important part of the literary work.

I have seen some applications of a book cover being used digitally like on iPhone apps but I think it’s more than just the design of printed covers. There is just something so special about holding something tactile, something you can feel and touch and treasure. I can’t imagine not being able to buy a magazine, newspaper or book at a store and not holding it in your hands. I have this addiction with buying these beautiful books that I’ll never read because I absolutely love that when you open the crisp cover of a book or unfold the silky pages of a magazine you get the smell of paper and ink. Nothing can compare.

I agree that holding a book gives a great tactile feel. The last thing I want to do at night is to read from a Kindle after spending all day designing on a computer. This will probably change, most likely for everyone. It is a process of transformation that people will go through. A few years ago a lot of print companies didn’t think anyone would read the news on the web. Now every major newspaper and magazine are on the web and really pushing the medium. Some magazine publishers are pushing now to being only online. The cost and waste of creating, publishing, and distributing a paper version is just too great. Instead of closing a door we have to think of this as opening opportunities.

i always thought the kindle was the dumbest thing ever. oh yeah, i want to cuddle up and read a book on a SCREEN as it blazes light into my eyeballs, continuing the damage my computer does every day.
