So here we are. With the year 2010 around the corner, there’s a lot of events, material, ideas, music, and art to reflect back on and think about. What defined us in the last ten years? We could go on about this forever, and perhaps we here at TDP will address a bit of this closer to the end of the month. However, npr has already begun their analysis of the decade in music, by producing a few podcast episodes addressing the best music in general, as well as the top 50 recordings of the 2000s. After listening to both, it was fun to remember how different things were in the early 00s (remember how HUGE Jennifer Lopex was? And the whole Latin-fusion bit? Whatever happened to SISQO?!) and how incredibly all-encompassing and relevant this decade was in music. It changed our culture and went through cycles of adaptations to fit the way we live, the way we share and listen to music. As many npr contributers have said, this was quite possibly the best ten years EVER for music—and they’ll tell you why. This visual timeline is also good for some perspective. The good, the bad, the revolutionary; underground, mainstream—it’s all here! So have a listen, it’ll jog your memory.
