The United Kingdom coin redesign happened in 2008, but since we’re across the pond, this is news to us!

The D&AD Blog posted about the redesign, designed by Matt Dent, and minted by The Royal Mint. The Royal Mint held a contest to design the new coins (a policy we aren’t fans of) and out of 4,000 entries, Dent’s design rose to the top.

Each coin between the penny and the fifty pence piece features part of an image. They can be put together like a puzzle to create the Shield of the Royal Arms. The pound coin completes the set with the full shield.

It’s rare that design this beautiful makes it through all the committees, the government, and even the Queen. Kudos to the UK for having beautiful currency.
