It’s no secret I love me some Van Morrison. Like, a LOT. So when I got Astral Weeks Live at the Hollywood Bowl, I was so pleased to see his nice, simple choice for an album cover (that looks fantastic at 12×12″). His infinite discography is full of beautiful music and not-so-beautiful graphic treatments of type and image (weird photos, overly boho-looking typography, etc.).
In his old age though, it seems Van the Man’s getting his act together. It’s not that all of his covers are terrible–because in most cases, they’re just a sign of the times–no crime for someone whose career has lasted almost 50 years–but I’m just glad to see him keeping up with the game and really working on his image. He’s a huge star and he knows he has to stay relevant. Plus I love the pink type! Some of his “worsts” are included if you read more.

Here are some clunkers…I included Veedon Fleece because my dad hates it but I actually LOVE it. It looks like M83′s Saturdays=Youth (muahaha, I see what you did here, clever, clever!)

I attended Van Morrison’s concert last night in Calgary, Canada. It was in a smaller venue than the last time he was here, and the acoustics were much better. This intimate setting, Van’s incrediblely insynch band, and his passion for music shone through vibrantly.
I have been a fan of his since I was 12, which means 38 years. In my 50th year seeing him in this setting, has been an unexpected and highly appreciated gift.
Highlight – when he smacked the mike with a closed fist to illustrate slamming a door. Thanks Van, there is nothing like you on this planet. Blessings.
