Obsessive Consumption: What Did You Buy Today?

“Our daily lives are filled with consumption…parking tickets, coffee, packs of gum, shoes, electricity bills and burritos…everything we buy has its own story to tell. Obsessive Consumption: What Did You Buy Today? represents a selection of three years of ink drawings of sundry items.”

Princeton Architectural Press recently published three years of Kate Bingaman Burt’s daily purchase drawings. She began by drawing something she had purchased each day on February 5th, 2006. This book contains three years worth of drawings.

Curt Merlo

I not only like the rich textures of Curt Merlo‘s work, but the conceptual simplicity that gets the idea across. He is definitely well suited for the editorial world. Plus, there’s just something about that top image that makes me smile. Check out the rest of his work here.

Ira Glass on inexperience

Ira Glass talks about being young, having taste & ambition, and being dissatisfied with the work you do. I needed to hear this because it’s the exact phase I’m in.

It takes a while, it’s gonna take you a while, it’s normal to take a while and you just have to fight your way through that. OK? You will be fierce, you will be a warrior and you will make things that aren’t as good as you know in your heart you want them to be, and you’ll just make one after another…

Just listen, listen again every year, and keep pressing forward.

Wim Crouwel — A graphic odyssey

Check out this video and site celebrating Wim Crouwel’s exhibit at the Design Museum in London. (Or if you live in London, you should just go check out the exhibit.)

Regarded as one of the leading designers of the twentieth century, Crouwel embraced a new modernity to produce typographic designs that captured the essence of the emerging computer and space age of the early 1960s.

Spanning over 60 years, this exhibition covers Crouwel’s rigorous design approach and key moments in his career including his work for design practice Total Design, the identity for the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, as well as his iconic poster, print, typography and lesser known exhibition design.
