In and Out with Dick and Jane

Written by James Victore and illustrated by Ross MacDonald, In and Out with Dick and Jane is a loving parody based on the Dick and Jane series from a generation ago, a project which took 15 years to finally happen.

It’s a simple book, which tells a timeless tale of children and their world. A beautiful, sunny joyful world filled with foreclosures, gun culture, school shootings, abuse by priests, serial killer clowns, meth labs, racism, the Times Square bomber, big box stores, credit card debt, sex education, ADHD drugs, poor school nutrition, soccer dads, bestiality, latch key kids, Viagra, obesity, litter, pollution – in other words, a world much like our own.

You can buy it on Amazon (pretty affordable too!) starting tomorrow.

Awkward Stock Photos

We’ve all stumbled on these kinds of images from time to time. Images that make you feel so uncomfortable, yet you can’t seem look away. You have no idea what they would ever be used for, but thanks to Awkward Stock Photos they have their place in the world now.

Going Solo

A stop frame animation created for the Toffie Festival 2011. It shares advice from local (South African) and international designers on starting your own business.

Loved this so hard, some nice type and great advice, by Studio Botes.

Doodle Everyday

Stumbled upon these adorable drawings by Lim Heng Swee, an illustrator living and working in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She started Doodle Everyday as a personal project, and has a lot of work up, so make sure to take a look around!

YoBeat talks to Draplin

Aaron Draplin is one of my favorite designers. Dude’s just so wise and so real.

Aaron Draplin of Draplin Design Co. talks to YoBeat.com about snowboarding and design. From his early days at Snowboarder Magazine, then Snowboard Mag along with identity work for brands like Union and Coal, Draplin has left his bold mark on the snowboard industry, and beyond.

The Physics of Skateboarding

Really cool video about the physics of skateboarding, including some sick slow-mo video by Already Been Done.

Pinch me! I’m at Pentagram

I was fortunate enough to score a spot at Drinks with a Designer: Pentagram this week, and I was so impressed I had to share my sneak peek.

The Architectural League of NY hosted the Design in 5 event at Pentagram’s office. Complete with drinks, snacks (including a jumbo glass ball of chips!) and designers mingling, the third floor of 204 Fifth Avenue was any designer’s dream.

Paula Scher, Michael Beirut, Abbott Miller, Daniel Weil and Eddie Opara each gave a short presentation highlighting some of Pentagram’s work. Everything from the High Line park’s identity to an unconventional clock was put into perspective from a variety of design angles.

Before the night ended, Michael Beirut gave an impromptu tour of the building. I couldn’t help but snag a photo in front of the vault downstairs and of a few friends taking a turn at their foosball table.

To get a glimpse of the work Pentagram creates in an up close and personal setting was definitely a highlight for me. The level of consistency they produce at is one to aspire to!
