Danny MacAskill, a team rider of Inspired Bicycles, shows us what’s possible when you combine a bicycle with the city. It takes a lot to impress me, even more for me to post it here, and I was copy & pasting youtube code before this video was even over. Even if you’re not into bicycles or tricks, you can marvel at the skill and inventiveness here.

Filmed over the period of a few months in and around Edinburgh by Dave Sowerby, this video of Inspired Bicycles team rider Danny MacAskill (more info at www.dannymacaskill.co.uk) features probably the best collection of street/street trials riding ever seen. There’s some huge riding, but also some of the most technically difficult and imaginative lines you will ever see. Without a doubt, this video pushes the envelope of what is perceived as possible on a trials bike.

I stumbled across this while browsing mountain bike videos at 3am. Just sick. Check out 3:05 of the video. Mind = blown. Go ride your bike.

A while back we posted Project Le Tour, a photo project from photographer Brent Humphreys. He has opened an online shop selling posters of his photography and some interesting t-shirts. I want the King of the Mountains shirt!

Lance Armstrong SRAM posterLance Armstrong SRAM posters

To celebrate Lance Armstrong’s return to cycling, SRAM have commissioned JDK Design to create a series of limited edition posters commemorating the key events Armstrong races in 2009. Each poster is 24″ x 36″, hand screenprinted, and individually numbered. The posters are being given away as part of their “Choose to Win!” campaign. Basically, if you buy a SRAM-equipped road bike (with Red, Force or Rival groupsets), you are eligible to receive a poster. For those who are not bicycle savvy, bicycles with those components are measured in thousands of dollars.

I hope they are unable to give all the posters away – I’d love to get my hands on these!

Kara Ginther Brooks saddlesKara Ginther Brooks saddlesKara Ginther Brooks saddlesKara Ginther Brooks saddles

Leather artist Kara Ginther is transforming Brooks leather saddles into beautiful pieces of art. Kara starts with a plain Brooks Saddle and carves beautiful patterns into them by hand.

I have a minor obsession with Brooks Saddles already, and own two of them, so I really appreciate work like this.

G-Star RAW, a Dutch urban clothing company, has teamed up with Cannondale to create the ‘RAW CANNONDALE.’ They started with a Cannondale Bad Boy and pretty much went nuts. The bikes are a limited edition, expensive (£1,500 or around $2,500), and are only available in Europe.

boardman-bicycle

Chris Boardman, Olympic cyclist, has revealed a new innovative bicycle that is “impossible to steal” and features puncture-proof tires. A built-in computer will read your fingerprint to unlock it’s “unbreakable” self-locking mechanism. In addition to that – the bike can play music & count calories while you pedal and can assist your pedaling with a built-in solar-powered electric motor. The wheels have no spokes and the entire frame is made of carbon fiber, making the bike aerodynamic, strong and lightweight.

Want one? Boardman says the bike can be built with existing technologies, but financial feasibility may take 20 years. Oh well. Concepts like these rarely are built in their entirety but ideas from this concept and others will help shape the future of bicycle design.

Above are just a few examples of the many ways you can create your own bike at the Urban Outfitters Bike Shop. You can choose from 3 frame sizes and customize everything from the grips right down to the chain. With a 7 day wait time for your bike to be built, you’ll be riding in no time.

The Big Picture - 2009 Tour de FranceThe Big Picture - 2009 Tour de FranceThe Big Picture - 2009 Tour de France

Boston Globe’s The Big Picture is a photojournalism site that features large photographs of current events in worldwide culture ranging from sports and celebrations to politics and war. Today’s collection of  ’2009 Tour de France‘ has some excellent photography on this month’s race.

We posted a photographer last week who shoots the tour, but I just don’t get enough of these photos. It really shows why many refer to the Tour as the best sporting event in the world.

The Big Picture is updated every Monday, Wednesday and Friday by Alan Taylor, and is a consistent look at current events through the eyes of some of the best photojournalists today.

Project Le Tour is an ongoing photo project for photographer Brent Humphreys who makes the annual trip to France to photograph the most prestigious cycling race in the world, The Tour de France.

The project features photography ranging from excellent close up action photos of the racers, grand landscape photos of the peleton, to some remarkable group and more intimate shots of the fan-demonium that occurs each year. Since I’m a sucker for anything related to the Tour, this was a nice treat to run across.

Check out his site at www.projectletour.com for the entire set.

As a sidenote, be prepared for the site to resize your browser not once, but twice. Also, there is no gallery so you must flip thru the photos at an agonizing pace. If the photos weren’t so good I’d probably post this site as a ‘what-not-to-do-in-webdesign,’ but the photos are worth the hassle this time.
