JESS3 designed and animated this for the JESS3 lecture at Stevenson University for AIGA Baltimore in Feb 2010.

The State of the Internet is an infographic video which brings the shear size of the internet into focus. The numbers are staggering. 90 Trillion emails sent last year (90,000,000,000,000), 27 Million Tweets per day, Facebook’s 6 Million page views per minute.

A nice soundtrack and lovely animations make this boring info easy and interesting to digest.

Oh what a tangled web we weave.

Typodarium 2011 CalendarTypodarium 2011 Calendar

On February 25th, Typodarium opened its 2011 Call for Entries. 160 font-labels and designers signed in and filled up all 365 days in 42 hours! You can still sign in here for a waiting list as some of the contributions may be rejected.

In case you missed it, here’s our post from this year’s Typodarium calendar.

I currently have the 2010 version on my desk, and love it! My favorite so far has been Surface Medium, the font for Tuesday, February 2nd. Why? Because the description on the back simply says “Carly Gilligan. Would you marry me?”

Purchase your 2011 Typodarium calendar here.

typeface5typeface3

Now here is an interesting concept from Mary Huang.

The design of typefaces is founded upon principles from the days of metal type, when creating individual fonts was a laborious process and constrained by physical requirements. Most digital type design follows those same conventions, but technology gives us opportunities to make type design more spontaneous and personal.

It is really interesting to see the human aspect of typography come through this directly. I’m interested to hear your comments.

Font Aid IV: Coming TogetherFont Aid IV: Coming TogetherFont Aid IV: Coming TogetherFont Aid IV: Coming Together

In response to the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the Society of Typographic Aficionados issued a call to action to the typographic and design communities to participate in Font Aid IV. The result was Coming Together, an OpenType font that contains over 400 ampersand glyphs designed by participants from around the world. All proceeds from the sale of the typeface go to Doctors Without Borders, in support of continuing relief efforts in Haiti.

Close to 400 people from 37 countries submitted an ampersand design to this font. A full list of contributors is available on the The Society of Typographic Aficionados website.

You can purchase this typeface on Veer for $20, with all proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders.

Bella Figura CalligraphyBella Figura CalligraphyBella Figura Calligraphy

While searching for something to brighten up my Friday during an oh-so-stressful week of work, I came across this beauty from Bella Figura.

Ummm…hello, you gorgeous thing, you.

Hold on a tic while I wipe the drool off my keyboard, and lift my jaw back to its normal position… No words, I just want to touch. Slowly drag my finger across the page, enjoy, then maybe repeat a few times. The calligraphy, the paper, and did you see that rsvp card?! I’m a huge sucker for anything in the card/invite/stationary/general make-your-day-with-this-simple-little-thing arena (as you’ll come to see) – but letterpress work? It makes me swoon. Every. Single. Time. This rendered me speechless. Anyone that knows me knows that is quite a feat.

So, hat’s off to you, Bella Figura, for taking away any words I could use to describe your work.

Check out their printing and general loveliness at www.bellafigura.com. Prepare for lovely. Make sure to check out the whole site – from the designers they hand-picked to do custom designs, their absolute, die-hard love of the craft, to their willingness to bend over backwards to give you just what you want.

By the way, I’m new here — I’m Gwen, and I hope you enjoy this and future beauties I plan to bring your way :)
